County Development Program

The idea is to select 12 yr olds from peak performance achieved by the end of the season in August.

The Development Program looks at
Technical skills - stroke technique, starts & turns and speed and stamina
Tactical – race processes
Physical – Awareness of Pre &Post pool stretching, land training etc…
Psychological – mental skills & goal processing
Lifestyle – importance of good nutrition
Behaviour – Understand OADF – enjoys the journey and is a good learner.

Following on from the County Program the Region looks at providing a Program for 13 yr olds
following a similar pathway and criteria. It obviously gets a little more difficult to get selected for
this Program.

Any questions please give me a shout.

The Development Program offers opportunities for Club coaches to get involved as Skills Coaches,
you need to have a Level 1 qualification to take part and would be working under a Lead Coach
responsible for upto 6 swimmers.

Following from the County Program there is the opportunity to get involved with the Regional and
National Camps. It is a requirement for entry to the Regional and national Program that you have
recently taken part in the County event.

Any coach interested in being involved please contact me.

Shropshire ASA Development Programme

As you may be aware, British Swimming introduced a new scheme in 2017 in an attempt to improve the prospects of future success at international level. The new scheme was produced following a major review of swimming in the UK after the 2012 Olympics. This review was conducted by Swim England/British Swimming staff, Home Nations Performance staff and former Olympic coaches and athletes and a few of the outcomes were:-

  • A fundamental lack of technical excellence within our developing young swimmers.

  • Stopwatches being the main driver rather than technical skill development.

  • Too much focus on junior outcomes.

  • Inability of our best senior swimmers to perform skills to a high level under pressure.

In order to address some of these issues the England Programmes team introduced a new performance pathway to help all swimmers to reach their full potential whilst also giving an opportunity for coach education and development.

The first step on the pathway starts at county level. All counties are now standardising their County Championship format, and Shropshire ASA have made changes to the programme over the past 3 years so that this year we have captured all essential requirements within the scheme.

With the County Championship structure in place the next stage is to follow the England Programmes Pathway for the swimmers and coaches. At County level we are required to target the 11 year olds (age at 31st December 2019) and invite the top performing boys and girls to three development camps during the year. The selection is based solely on Swim England Rankings data following completion of the County Championships.

I, as Shropshire ASA’s Head Coach for this scheme, have attended training sessions with England Programmes staff so that again all counties are effectively singing from the same hymn sheet. The development camps are aimed at technical skill promotion for the swimmers and also an education opportunity for the skills coaches who will come from clubs within the county, with an aim of taking the messages back to their home club.

This will be the fourth year that we have run this programme in Shropshire. All those involved in the 2017,18 & 2019 programmes found it very useful and interesting according to the feedback from swimmers, parents and coaches. The 2020 programme will, in the main, follow the same structure with only minor changes, and so will hopefully be as successful as in previous years.

To explain in further detail we will be having a Parents Workshop during the first day of this years County Championships on Sunday 19th January at 12:10pm. This will also give an opportunity to ask any questions about the programme. This workshop is solely for parents of the current 11 year olds within the county (age on 31st December 2020) including any parents of swimmers who may not be competing that weekend.

Should you have any questions regarding the Performance Pathway, Development Camps or any other related matter you can contact me on Dannyproffitt@btinternet.com or look out for me during the County Championships.

Best regards

Danny Proffitt Shropshire ASA Head Coach
